Antarctic Cooling and Ozone Losses

چکیده
The fabrication of single-walled carbon nanotubes is still somewhat of an art form, and processes that either create the nanotubes at a much faster rate or of much greater length or purity is still needed. Zhu et al. (p. 884) use an improved floating catalyst method to create centimeterlong single-walled nanotube ropes that are significantly longer than those obtained from either chemical vapor deposition or laser-ablation methods.

Cooling of the Arctic and Antarctic Polar Stratospheres due to Ozone Depletion
Long time records of stratospheric temperatures indicate that substantial cooling has occurred during spring over polar regions of both hemispheres. These cooling patterns are coincident with observed recent ozone depletions. Time series of temperature from radiosonde, satellite, and National Centers for Environmental Prediction reanalysis data are analyzed in order to isolate the space–time st...
متن کاملInterpretation of recent Southern Hemisphere climate change.
Climate variability in the high-latitude Southern Hemisphere (SH) is dominated by the SH annular mode, a large-scale pattern of variability characterized by fluctuations in the strength of the circumpolar vortex. We present evidence that recent trends in the SH tropospheric circulation can be interpreted as a bias toward the high-index polarity of this pattern, with stronger westerly flow encir...
متن کاملAnnular Modes in the Extratropical Circulation. Part II: Trends*
The authors exploit the remarkable similarity between recent climate trends and the structure of the ‘‘annular modes’’ in the month-to-month variability (as described in a companion paper) to partition the trends into components linearly congruent with and linearly independent of the annular modes. The index of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) annular mode, referred to as the Arctic Oscillation (AO...
متن کاملContrasts between Antarctic and Arctic ozone depletion.
This work surveys the depth and character of ozone depletion in the Antarctic and Arctic using available long balloon-borne and ground-based records that cover multiple decades from ground-based sites. Such data reveal changes in the range of ozone values including the extremes observed as polar air passes over the stations. Antarctic ozone observations reveal widespread and massive local deple...
متن کاملAn atmospheric origin of the multi-decadal bipolar seesaw
A prominent feature of recent climatic change is the strong Arctic surface warming that is contemporaneous with broad cooling over much of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Longer global surface temperature observations suggest that this contrasting pole-to-pole change could be a manifestation of a multi-decadal interhemispheric or bipolar seesaw pattern, which is well correlated with the Nort...
